Air conditioning can be a major energy drain – especially when it’s left running in empty rooms. One of the simplest and most effective ways to save energy and money is to use AC only when someone is present.

How much can you save?

Studies show that 30–50% of air conditioning energy use occurs when no one is in the room – particularly in offices, schools, and apartments with fixed settings. By turning off your AC when not needed, you can save:

  • up to $75–150 per year in a typical household with a split AC unit,
  • around $500–1,200 per year in a small office (approx. 100 m²),
  • an average of 10–20% on your electricity bill during summer months.

Why does it matter?

AC units consume a lot of electricity, especially in cooling mode. Leaving them on in empty spaces maintains comfort for no one. The good news? Most modern AC systems can cool a room within minutes, so you won’t sacrifice comfort when you return.

What can you do?

  • Use a timer or occupancy sensor to switch off AC automatically.
  • Opt for fans or natural ventilation when possible – they use 20x less energy.
  • Close doors and blinds to reduce heat gain – less need for cooling.

Summary:

Turn off the AC when you leave the room. A small habit change, big energy savings.

Energy savings: up to 50% of AC power use
Potential yearly savings: $75–$1,200
Environmental benefit: lower power use = reduced carbon footprint
